We have 5 basic HP Avid validated systems. HP systems can be configured in many ways and we can order ANY specification we like from HP; however if we do so it takes over 3 weeks for HP to get the system to us, before we can reconfigure it properly as an editing system and send it to you. These systems represent specific versions of the Avid-validated specification that we can normal supply to you in our regular 5-10 day lead time.
The systems all have 2 Xeon processors. They are available with a different number of cores and at different speeds. The simplest processor, the E5-2620, has 8 cores. As you have two processors this means the computer has 16 cores available (8 in each processor). The processor also has "HyperThreading" which means the PC will double the number of cores. Therefore the 8 core system will have 32 cores available in Windows. The 10 core will have 40 cores available and the 12 core will have 48 cores. The processors are at different speeds as well. The simplest processor is an 8 core which runs at 2.1Ghz, where as the next one up is a 10 core which runs at 2.2Ghz. The 10 core processor is running slightly slower but as it has two more cores it is actually more powerful. As you move up the range of processors the speed and cores increase, and the price also increases quite dramatically.
Avid recommend having a higher number of cores over processing speed - so it is better to have a 10 core dual 2.2Ghz processors than dual 8 core 2.1Ghz processor
Avid used to only validate Quadro graphic cards. With the latest versions of Avid Media Composer 8, effects can be accelerated using all types of decent graphics cards, not just Quadros. So you do not need a Quadro card to get the best out of Avid, however, they are still part of the Avid validated specification - and one of the main reasons for buying an HP machine instead of a cheaper DVC equivalent is that it is Avid validated, so all these models come with a Quadro M4000 graphics card..
Avid have only validated a 512MB SSD primary drive for use in their systems. Although a smaller SSD would work it is not the validated Avid spec. An SSD is a much nicer drive to use for Windows in your computer than a normal mechanical drive, and given that you will be spending a large amount on the Xeon system in the first please we do not off a 1TB mechanical drive as an option on the Dual Xeon systems, only on single Xeon systems.
This system will come with a standard DVC 1 year warranty and an HP 3 year warranty. The DVC warranty covers everything in the system and include support on the Avid software. The HP Warranty covers the parts included in the "basic system" part of this quote. If a video drive fails, for example, this is not covered the the HP warranty but by the DVC one. If the Quadro graphic card, motherboard or SSD drive fails that would be covered by the HP warranty. The standard HP warranty is a "next business day" warranty. This means they guarantee to respond to any problems by the next working day. You can upgrade this to a 4 hour response time for £35+VAT if you prefer.
The DVC warranty covers the entire machine including the software and any other items you have included in the order from us. If there is a problem with the system contact us and we will help solve the problem over the phone. If this cannot be done we will pick the machine up, if it is inside the DVC warranty, bring it back to our premises and fix whatever the problem is, and send the machine back to you. If, in our telephone diagnose we determine the problem is with an HP part then we will get HP to come to your premises and fix it for you using their warranty. In many cases the problem can be sorted out over the phone without recourse to having the machine picked up. We will respond to any problems as soon as possible. We are available Monday-Friday 9.20 to 5.30 and normally respond to support calls within an hour or two.
After the first year has passed and DVC Warranty has expired we will still help you over the phone with technical problems, but if a part needs to be replaced or we have to carry out any work on the system at our premises they will be a reasonable charge involved. Of course the HP parts will still have 2 years of their warranty remaining.
