Avid 8.8 released
Avid have released version 8.8 of Media Composer. There are some interesting new features but the biggest news is that until 31st March 2017 owners of versions of Avid which are over 1 year old can upgrade to MC8 for a reasonable cost. ScriptSync and PhraseFind are also available once again, as add-ons.
Upgrade from old versions of Media Composer
Special offer - ends 31st March 2017
If you have an old version of Avid Media Composer, all the way back to version 3, you can now upgrade to the latest version. Since Avid introduced their subscription version of Media Composer, which they sell as well a "permanent licence", owners of the permanent licence have to buy a "1 year support contract" every year to keep the program up to date. If you missed a year your permanent licence version would be stuck at the one that was available when your contract ran out. If you wanted to get up to date you would have to buy a completely new version of Media Composer.
This offer means that if you did not pay for a yearly service contract you can still upgrade your old copy to the new version, although only if you do so before 31st March.
This upgrade costs £300+ VAT and is available now from the DVC webshop: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Avid-Media-Composer-Upgrade-Standard-Support-Reinstatement.html.
What's new in MC8.8
The following features have been added to Media Composer v8.8.
- Timeline Clip Notes - You can add notes to clips in the Timeline and view all the notes in the Timeline Clip Notes Window.
- Frame Cache for Effects
- ScriptSync - ScriptSync uses phonetic-indexing technology to analyze the audio portion of a clip and match it to lines of the script text.
- Bin Sharing on Non Avid Storage - The editing application will notify you if your third party storage is emulating Avid NEXIS or Avid ISIS storage.
- Change to Find Window - A few changes have been made to the Find Window.
- Change to the Script Window - A few changes have been made to the Script Window.
The return of ScriptSync and PhraseFind
Avid also announced the return of ScriptSync and PhraseFind . These programs used to be available with old versions of Avid but because they were made by a third party they had to be withdrawn. Now you can once again buy them as options for Avid. ScriptSync is £389+VAT and PhraseFind is £159+VAT, or you can buy them in a bundle for £469+VAT. There are also upgrade and educational versions available.
ScriptSync v2.0 and PhraseFind v2.0 will only run on a perpetual license currently. Support for subscription based licenses will come later in 2017. You must use Media Composer v8.8 or higher with the ScriptSync and PhraseFind Options v2.0.

DVC "editing in EDIUS 8" tutorial update
Work on updating our EDIUS tutorial is continuing and we have nearly finished remaking the entire editing section. In this section we discuss all the different options for editing in EDIUS, different editing modes and other editing-related features like Proxy mode and relinking clips .
We are not just re-filming the tutorial with a new interface but remaking the entire tutorial and adding information which was not included in the first place. We have extra chapters on subclips, match frame, markers, the different playback resolution options,as well as chapters covering topics that were in our EDIUS 7 tutorial, but all remade and re-explained.
If you have an EDIUS 8 tutorial you will be able to buy the new section for £20+VAT. You can also buy the section on its own for the same price.
You can buy the full tutorial for £80+VAT .
We are just finishing off the new version of the multi-camera section of this tutorial and when this is done and the tutorial is available you will be able to see the full details and order it from here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Order-a-section-of-the-tutorial.html
Adobe officially stop selling Premiere Pro CS6
Adobe officially stopped selling their CS6 products in January 2017. We have not been able to sell them at DVC for about a year, but if you knew where to look you could find them on the Adobe website. Now Adobe have stopped this as well, which means the only way to get Adobe software is to rent it via the Creative Cloud.
This makes sense, as the software was written several years ago and does not officially work on Windows 10 or the latest Mac OS, and will never get updated. However, for people who do not like the idea of renting software instead of buying it, this "officially" means their only option is to buy some other software.
You can see this page http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/cs6.html where all it says is "As of January 9, 2017 Creative Suite is no longer available for purchase."
If you rent the Creative Cloud you still get access to both Premiere Pro CS6 and Encore CS6, as well as the latest versions; CS6 were the last versions you could buy outright.
You can read more about the Creative Cloud version here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Adobe_Premiere_Pro.html
New Photo editing program, Affinity Photo, looks like a good alternative to Photoshop
Serif have produced a new Photo editing program which is packed with features and extremely powerful. Affinity Photo for Windows was released about a month ago and is available for £49.
As long time users of Photoshop we have to say we still prefer Adobe's photo program but Photoshop is only available as part of the Creative Cloud rental scheme where you have to pay every month for the software, whereas Affinity Photo gives you a permanent licence for a one-off payment. You cannot buy the software from us at DVC, you have to go to Serif directly.
You can read more and order the software here: https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/
