Attach a Hyperdeck Shuttle to your camera and record in a much less compressed format than your camera's native recording mechanism. The Shuttle records in either uncompressed, Avid DNxHD or Apple Pro Res. All of these formats can be understood and used by all the major editing programs on MAC or PC. To use Avid DNxHD you need to download and install Avid's free DNxHD codec pack (unless you have Avid of course). Apple ProRes is usable on ANY computer which has a recent version of QuickTime installed.
Uncompressed will give you the cleanest picture but will use a huge amount of space. Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD will use about the same amount of space - approximately 130GB per hour and still be very clean compared to H264 encoding. Also most camera recording formats are 8 bit, so, as long as your camera HDMI/SDI will output 10 bit, this means you can record your video in 10bit colour and make the most out of your camera.
The HyperDeck Shuttle is powered by rechargeable batteries so all you do is slot in the drive, connect to the camera and press the record button.
Hard drive format
The hard drives originally had to be formatted in MAC format, which was only possible if you had an Apple MAC PC, or if you bought an extra program called MAC drive for a PC. With the latest shuttles can be formatted in exFAT32 which is possible on both MAC and PC so this is no longer an issue. You may choose for format in MAC format as it has slightly better error checking than exFAT, but it is not necessary.
