DVC Christmas Opening times
December is here and Christmas is not too far away. We may do one more newsletter before Christmas, but it does depend on exciting things happening in the next 24 days.
DVC will be open until Midday on Thursday 24th December and will re-open on Monday January 4th 2016. We will continue to build and ship systems and software up to that point, so if you want an updated computer please get in touch. We make all our systems to order and in the run up to Christmas will put in extra hours just to make sure we can deliver your system to you in time for the festive period.
Just in case nothing major happens and we do not do a newsletter we would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers a Happy Christmas and New Year.
New laptops with desktop Skylake processors
In our last newsletter we talked about our new Skylake desktop processor laptops. Now all of our laptops have been updated to have Skylake processors.
Skylake processors are the latest generation of Intel processors, are available in laptop and desktop versions, and as i3s, i5s and i7s. The chips started shipping around September this year. They are faster than the previous generation "Haswell" processors, as you would expect, and also more economical on power.
We have been selling desktop computers with Skylake processors for the last couple of months and the first laptops to use Skylakes were the ones that used desktop processors. These are the most powerful laptops you can get, because they use desktop processors. Thankfully, because Intel are trying to make all their processors use less power, you can actually get a reasonable battery life (1 hourish) use out of a laptop with a desktop processor.
We talked about these laptops in our last newsletter and you can see more information on them here:
17" model : http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/17-desktop-processor-laptop.html
15" model : http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/15-Desktop-processor-laptop.html
Originally we said that these models would not work with Windows 7, only Windows 8 or 10, but a recent update to the Bios means we can now use them with Windows 7 as well.
We have also had two new models of laptop which use mobile Skylake processors. These are processors specifically designed for laptops, so have better power consumption (meaning longer battery life and light power units), but are less powerful than the desktop processors used in the laptops above.
The two new models are the Skylake laptop with Quick Sync and the high spec Skylake Laptop with Quick Sync. They use the same processors, so have the same power in the CPU. The major difference is that the "high spec" laptop has the option of better graphics cards, has a backlit keyboard, and can have more hard drives internally. The standard laptop comes with an optical drive - a DVD or Blu-ray writer - where as the high Spec laptop does not and you have to use an external optical drive. Both have Intel Quick Sync which can be used with Grass Valley EDIUS or Sony Vegas for fast encoding to H.264 formats like Blu-ray and MP4 files. The High spec model has a maximum of 32GB RAM, the standard model has a maximum of 16GB. Both models are available in 15.6" and 17.3" versions; the 15.6" version of the High Spec model can have a 3K or 4K screen, where as the standard model cannot.
You can read more about these laptops and configure them with different variations of graphics card and hard drives on our website:

EDIUS 8.1 update
As mentioned in our last newsletter Grass Valley have released their first update to EDIUS - version 8.1. They made some modifications to the user interface after some customer comments and added the following :
♦ Windows 10 support.
♦ OpenFX plug-in bridge - see below for more information.
♦ Optimised playback for DNxHD and Pro Res codecs so EDIUS can handle more layers in real time.
♦ Project templates - save a project as a template. Start new projects using the template so that from then on you can start projects with a specific timeline layout, media, settings and custom DVD menus.
♦ Relink to offline or moved clips in the GV Browser.
We made a video covering all these changes which you can see on our website: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/What-s-new-in-EDIUS-8.1.html
There are 6 chapters which cover Windows 10 support, the interface changes, improved performance with DNxHD and ProRes, project templates, the GV browser changes and the OFX bridge.
EDIUS 8.1 is free to owners of EDIUS 8. If you have EDIUS Pro it will prompt you download the update when you start the program. Users of EDIUS Workgroup will not be prompted - visit the Grass Valley support site, log on and download the patch from there: >http://www.grassvalley.com/auth?r=%2Fsupport%2Fdownloads%2Fproducts.
One of the additions to EDIUS 8.1 is an OFX plug-in bridge. This allows you to use a particular type of common video plug-in called OFX. Just because a plug-in is an OFX plug-in it does not mean it will work through this OFX-bridge but it does open up EDIUS to more add-ons. The first version of the Bridge that has been released is a public beta version - which means it works, but there may be issues.
Initially the Sapphire OFX plug-ins are supported, with support planned for Boris Continuum 10 in the future. The most recent addition has been support for the Ignite plug-ins from HitFilm. The latter is possibly the most interesting as it is by far the cheapest and gives you access to a large range of effects.
The bridge is not installed by default when you install EDIUS 8.1. You have to download the installer separately from Grass Valley. This is available from either the normal EDIUS download page. You can read more information reagrding the bridge on your EDIUS ID account page.
The OFX bridge has been written by NewBlueFX for Grass Valley. It is free to owners of EDIUS 8 and will only work with EDIUS 8.1 (Workgroup or Pro). When you install it you will need to set up a NewBlue account to activate it. This is separate to your EDIUS ID account that is required for using EDIUS Pro 8. The installer also installs a couple of sample NewBlue effects and NewBlue Titler Pro 2. NB Titler Pro 2 can do animated titles in 2D and 3D, with a variety of different movements, and you can also create your own. It gives you more options than QuickTitler but is not as good as using the latest version of NewBlue Titler Pro, version 4, or VisTitle (VisTitle is our favourite titling program for EDIUS).
NewBlue give you 1 year's use of Titler Pro 2 for free. After one year you have to pay for the full version or stop using it. The obvious intention is to get you to like NewBlue Titler Pro and buy the full version. Of course, you do not have to do this and could just use a more comprehensive titler than QuickTitler for a year for nothing.
There are many tutorials in using NB Titler Pro on the Internet although many cover later versions. NewBlue recently made some videos on how to use NB Titler Pro 2 in Avid, as the Titler comes free with Avid Media Composer, and these could also help EDIUS users as the interface is the same in both programs. You can see these videos on YouTube:
Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwcqq8gazuk
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQFnW-TgQlQ
Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKTsnD6QaFI
We included a chapter on the OFX bridge in our "What's new in EDIUS 8.1" video, although this is only a short introduction. We are hoping to get a longer video, highlighting the HitFilm plug-ins, made and hopefully posted on our YouTube channel before Christmas.
You can read more about EDIUS 8 on our website: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Canopus_Edius_Pro.html
HitFilm Pro 4 has been released. HitFilm is a comprehensive compositing program, similar in many ways to After Effects, but available on a permanent licence and at a much lower price.
Hitfilm has a wide variety of effects, comprehensive masks and keyframing abilities and a huge host of particle effects. Hitfilm 3 lacked comprehensive titling so they have added Boris 3D text effects in HitFilm 4. HitFilm also comes with one of the most advanced tracking plug-ins, Mocha, using a special version of Mocha designed for HitFilm.
The new versions also adds more effects and has great improvements for importing 3D models made in programs like Cinema 4D and Lightwave, compositing them into scenes with live action inside of HitFilm - rather than the traditional method of making a movie of your 3D scene and then trying to composite the results.
HitFilm also has a huge range of free tutorials on their website to help you learn the program. These also give you a good idea of what you can do with the program before deciding to buy it. You can see these tutorials here: http://hitfilm.com/video-tutorials#/
There is a trial version of the program you can download before buying to see how well you can use the program available from their website: http://hitfilm.com/pro/demo
There is even a free version, HitFilm 3 Express, which you can download and use.
HitFilm Pro 4 is £226+VAT, £272 inc. and available from us at DVC : http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/HitFilm-Pro-4.html
If you buy HitFilm you also get the range of Ignite Plug-ins which work in various editing programs.
HitFilm Ignite plug-ins for Adobe, EDIUS 8, Vegas and Resolve
As we mentioned above you can get a variety of the HitFilm effects as plug-ins that work inside your editing program. These are not all the effects which are available inside HitFilm and functions like motion tracking have to be carried out by your editing or effects program. However, it does give you access to a wide variety of grading, particle, keying and lighting effects directly in your editing program.
We have a full list of the plug-ins available on our website and you can download a trial version from HitFilm and see whether they would be useful for you.
The plug-ins work inside Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas Pro 13 and DaVinci Resolve. They also work in Grass Valley EDIUS via the beta OFX plug-in bridge.
When you buy the plug-ins you get them for all of the above programs. If you buy HitFilm itself it also comes with the plug-ins.
The plug-ins are £129+VAT, £155 inc from us at DVC. You can read more and order them here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/HitFilm-Ignite-Plug-ins.html
Windows 10 was released in July; you have until July 2016 to take Microsoft up on the offer of a free upgrade for your Windows 7 or Windows 8 system. Microsoft released a major update for Windows 10 in November which improved it and is kind of the equivalent of "service pack 1".
Should you let Windows update your existing system?
Our answer to this question in the last newsletter was "probably not"; we still think this may be the case for a lot of video users but it does depend on what programs you are using and how old they are. If you only use programs which are validated for Windows 10 then you should be ok. If you have less recent programs (maybe Premiere Pro CS6) then you may be alright but you also may have problems; we have had some users reporting problems and others not.
People with older programs, such as Premiere Pro CS5 or earlier, EDIUS 5 & 6 or earlier, and Media Composer 7 or earlier, should ONLY upgrade to Windows 10 if they are going to buy the new version of their editing software. Systems with these older versions have generally been reverted to Windows 7 after a week or two, as they simply would not work properly under Windows 10.
The new update to Windows 10 makes it work a little better than before, although we still do not have a brilliant new feature that will be a boon to video users that would make us insist you all rush out and update.
Given that the update will be free until July and that Windows 10 will be "the future", it makes sense to update at some time before the July deadline.
Just running the Windows update is not enough normally to get your system working 100%. We find you have to update a variety of drivers, or better still do a completely clean install of Windows 10 and set up everything from scratch.
Let DVC absorb the pain of updating
We can update your system to Windows 10 for you and test out your various programs, for which we would charge a day's labour (£200+VAT). It will take us more than a day to install and test the system for you so we cannot update and test your system "while you wait". Contact us firstname.lastname@example.org or by ringing 01273 205700 to discuss your options.
How do I get rid of the annoying Windows 10 upgrade message as I don't want to update yet?
On Windows 7 and Windows 8 you will be prompted to upgrade to Windows 10 at regular intervals. This is caused by a Windows update. You can find the update, uninstall it and then hide it but it comes back. We have a batch file that will get rid of the update message for good, which we have put on our website and you can download here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/downloads/Remove_MS_Upgrade_To_10_Nag.bat
Please note that if you run this batch file you will not be asked to update to Windows 10 again so when you choose to update you will have to it manually.
We have just 3 copies left of VisTitle for EDIUS with free the 5 extra plug-ins pack. VisTitle is our favourite titling program for EDIUS. The main program has lots of great features but there is also a pack of 5 extra plug-ins which add some very nice features. These extra plug-ins are normally £40 extra, if you buy them with VisTitle, and £99 extra if you buy them separately.
For a limited time these plug-ins will come free with VisTitle for a total price of £199+VAT.
The extra plug-ins are:
- 3D Particles - many fancy particle effects, all keyframmable and customisable.
- Handwriting - get VisTitle to draw an object on screen, typically hand-written-style text.
- Karaoke - Make Karaoke style titles that appear on screen.
- 3D chart - make 3D charts easily which animated on screen.
- 2D path to 3D object - create a 2D object in VisTitle and then convert it to 3D with depth, bevels etc.
You can read more about VisTitle and order the program, plug-ins and updates here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/VisTitle-2-with-5-additional-plug-ins-bundle-3226.html#SID=446
Avid have released information on their user forums that a special offer is available for people with older versions of Media Composer to upgrade to the current version, Media Composer 8, for $499, during December. This offer is available through resellers like ourselves at DVC. We do not yet have the UK pricing for this offer but it will be added to our website soon.
With the advent of subscription Avid said that, if you have a permanent Avid licence, you would have to pay every year for a support contract to be able to keep it up to date. If you missed out on buying the support contract for one year you would no longer be able to upgrade. This means people with versions of Avid prior to version 8 cannot upgrade their Avid software and would have to buy new licences if they wanted the latest version.
This new offer is for anyone who has a old copy of Media Composer which is not normally eligible for an upgrade. This means if you did not take out a support contract now is your chance to upgrade your old licence to the latest version.
When we have UK pricing you will be able to order the upgrade here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Avid_Media_Composer.html
Avid 8.4.3 Available
Avid have released an update to Media Composer. Media Composer 8.4.3 fixes quite a few bugs but does not add any major new features to Avid. The most obvious things which do not change are that Avid is only validated for use with Windows 7 and Windows 8, not Windows 10. It is also not validated for the latest MAC O/S, El Capitan. Thankfully we can still supply PCs using Windows 7 and Windows 8, although Macs can only be bought these days with the latest operating system installed. We do not have any information on when Avid will support the latest o/s from either Microsoft or Apple.
You can see details of our DVC Avid systems here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Avid_Systems.html
Atomos SDI to HDMI converter
We have an offer on an ATOMOS SDI to HDMI converter. The Connect H2S converter is battery operated and converts an HDMI signal to SDI. It is small enough to fit in your pocket and very simple to use. We have one only at the low price of £163+VAT. This is new and unopened with a full warranty. You can order it here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Atomos-SDI-HDMI-converter.html
2TB RAID rated drives
In our last newsletter we mentioned 8 RAID-rated drives which we were selling at a low price. We have 5 of these drives left. They are Seagate Enterprise class 2TB RAID hard drives, rated for use as RAID drives (which means they are better tested than normal drives and are designed to work 24/7). Normally we would sell these at £120+VAT each but we are selling all 5 at £89+VAT each.
You can see more information and order these drives here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/seagate_riad_drives.html
DVC 4K Thunderbolt system with UltraStudio 4K
As the new Skylake systems are out we are selling our existing Haswell demo system at a reduced price. The Haswell systems performs at around 90-95% the speed of the Skylake.
Our demo system has a Thunderbolt connection built-in so can be used with Blackmagic Thunderbolt devices.
With this system you also have the option to buy our UltraStudio 4K demo unit at half the full retail price.
As this is part of a DVC system most of the items in the system are actually new. The ex-demo components are the Intel processor, Thunderbolt Motherboard, and Blackmagic UltraStudio 4K; these items have been using in our demo system for about a year. The rest of the system, hard drives, case, graphics card power supply etc. are all new with a full warranty.
A typical system with 120GB solid state drive, 2TB video drive, 16GB RAM and a Blu-ray writer is £1,514 ex-VAT and £1,850 inc-VAT. This is a saving of £400 inc VAT on the cost of a new system. This has a copy of Windows included although no editing program is included. We can install an editing program you currently own or you can add one to the system.
Apart from the ex-demo parts (processor, motherboard and UltraStudio) the other components can be varied. You may want a better graphics card to use the system with Premiere Pro or Resolve, for example. If you visit the special offer section of the website you can configure the system with a variety of different components.
You can read more about the system and change the configuration of the new components here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Ex-demo-Thunderbolt-system-with-UltraStudio-4K.html
Not allowed to connect to the Internet on your editing machine? Adobe have a Creative Cloud option for you!
Adobe have released a version of their video applications which can be used by people who have computers which are not allowed to connect to the Internet. The Creative Cloud applications normally require that you connect once a month to validate the licence. However, this is not possible for some users as they are not allowed to connect their computers to the Internet for security or contractual reasons. These users have had to continue to use Adobe CS6 and could not move onto the Creative Cloud
This new version of Creative Cloud will let these users subscribe to the Cloud and use them on machines which are not connected to the Internet and do not have to be connected for at least 3 years..
This requires a special contract with Adobe. You can apply for this through resellers like DVC. You will not see this offer on the Adobe website and they will not be doing any mass marketing about it as it is designed purely for certain types of video user. Only certain users will qualify:
- People who are working in Film or TV broadcast who are contractually obliged not to have their computers connected to the internet..
- Users who cannot connect their computers to the Internet for security reasons and who are producing professional video.
Assuming you qualify then Adobe will make a special contract with you and give you access to special offline install versions of their software.
This option is not available as an upgrade to people who already have Creative Cloud or Creative Cloud for Teams.
If you would like more information please contact us at email@example.com or telephone 01273 205700.
Blackmagic have release a couple of varieties of new drivers over the last few week. However we have had a variety of problems with them. The latest version, 10.5.2, seems to cause Blue screen crashes on some Windows 10 systems. For now the latest version of the drivers that we recommend using are 10.4.3.
