EDIUS WorkgroupSpecial offer- buy a DVC EDIUS system and get EDIUS Workgroup instead of EDIUS Pro, while stocks last

For a limited time, when you buy a DVC EDIUS system, we will give you  EDIUS Workgroup for the price of EDIUS Pro. EDIUS Workgroup 8 costs 434+VAT more than EDIUS Pro. It adds quite a few significant extra features to EDIUS, many aimed at broadcasters, which include a loudness meter, MXF exports, watch folders and the ability to edit files which are currently being captured. The Workgroup version of EDIUS can also export Avid DNxHD MXF files which are the only real way of easily moving projects from EDIUS to Avid Media Composer.

In addition to these features all editors will also appreciate:

  • Reduced playback resolution: You can drop the resolution to let you playback difficult timelines without rendering. This is really useful, especially if you are editing complex sequences with 4K footage.
  • No Internet needed: the Workgroup version never has to be connected to the Internet, unlike the Pro version which has to be connected to the Internet once-a-month.

For a limited time we will supply the Workgroup version of EDIUS for the price of EDIUS Pro when ordered with a DVC system. Stock is limited so order now.

You can see our full range of EDIUS systems here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Edius_Systems.html

Windows 7Last chance to buy a system with Windows 7

Microsoft will stop selling Windows 7 at the end of October - so you have 5 working days left to order a Windows 7 system. Windows 8 is also being discontinued.

After the end of the month (or whenever we run out of stock) a new system will have to have Windows 10 installed. This will be fine if you are using an up-to-date program but if you are using an older version this may be a problem. For example, EDIUS 8 is validated and works well on Windows 10. EDIUS 7 is not validated but appears to work properly. EDIUS 6.5 does not work well on Windows 10 and you really need Windows 7 if using EDIUS 6.5 or earlier.

The same is true of other programs. We are currently making a new system based around a customer's Premiere Pro CS5, and have to use Windows 7 as there is no combination of hardware and software that can get Premiere Pro CS5 working properly on Windows 10 with a decent video output. The customer decided he wanted to stay with CS5 as it does enough for him and he does not want to rent through the Creative Cloud, but needed a new, faster computer. Once we can no longer buy Windows 7 this could be a major problem!

You can see the full list of details of our systems here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/DVC_systems.html

You only need to order the system before the end of the month so we can buy a copy of Windows 7 for you before they are no longer available. The system can be delivered or collected during November.

Desktop processorOur desktop processor laptops can now have 4K screens

At last we can get 4K screens on our 17" desktop processor laptops. These screens are 3840x2160 and have a wide gamut so display very vibrant colours. The larger number of pixels means a sharper image. In an editing program, if you make the player or recorder window about of the size of the screen it would actually be displaying all the pixels of an HD picture on screen, as well as the rest of the editing interface.

Get the screen calibrated
We have also added the option to have the screen properly calibrated by us when fitted, for an extra 20, so you can switch the screen between normal mode and other settings such as REC709 and REC2020. This will help you judge the picture properly on the computer screen although it is not a replacement for outputting the image to a decent video monitor using a Blackmagic device. Thankfully, our desktop processor laptops come with Thunderbolt 3 connections which work with most of the Blackmagic Thunderbolt video devices, so you can output to a proper video screen.

Laptops with 4K screens are available now. Adding a 4K screen costs just 100 more than using an HD screen.

You can read more and configure a laptop with a 4K screen here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/17.3-Skylake-nVidia-10-series-desktop-processor-laptop.html

You can also add a 4K screen to our dual graphics card laptop: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Dual-graphic-card-Skylake-laptop.html

Windows tips

We have made a short video showing some of the things we use in Windows all the time. Our favourite feature has to be the way to trim down a file list in explorer to certain types of file, which is  mentioned about 8 mins into the video.  We also talk about the snipping tool for quick screen shots, sticky notes for easily adding notes to Windows, how to find the Windows 7 control panel in Windows 10 and a few more.

You can see the video here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Windows-tips.html

EDIUS 8 tutorialEDIUS 8 tutorial updated

We are slowly updating our EDIUS tutorial so that all the sections are made using the EDIUS 8 interface, and at the same time updating the content to have the new features. The latest version has a completely new "print to file" section as well as new sections for the Primary Colour Corrector and motion tracking in mask filter.
You can see details and order the tutorial here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Complete-EDIUS-8-training-course.html

Brexit unfortunately means most prices are going up

As most computer components are priced in dollars, and as the currency drops after the Brexit vote, prices of computer components and software have gone up quite a lot over the last few weeks. Hopefully the currency will settle down now but you can never be too sure.

HP ZBookNew HP laptop added to website

We have added a new HP laptop to the website. The new HPZbook is available in either a 15" or a 17" model and can have two extra hard drives, in addition to the main Windows M.2 drive with which it ships. It has two Thunderbolt 3 connections. The Thunderbolt 3 connections work with Blackmagic Thunderbolt 2 devices (using and adaptor) and also our Thunderbolt-FireWire adaptor . This means you can capture analogue and DV/HDV footage as well as output a variety of proper video signals up to full 4K.

These laptops come with nVidia Quadro graphics cards and use either a mobile i7 processor or an mobile Intel Xeon processor. Neither of these processors are better than the desktop i7 processors found in our desktop processor laptops; The mobile i7s are the same as those found in our Quick Sync laptop and high spec laptop. The mobile Xeons are slightly faster than the Mobile i7s.

There is also a docking station available which connects via Thunderbolt 3 and lets you add extra screens, keyboard etc. One nice feature is that the laptop can be powered by one cable from the docking station so all you need to do when back at base is plug in and the laptop is powered and connected to whatever screens and peripherals you use at base.

You can see the full range of these ZBooks, including the Avid-validated specification, here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/HPlaptop.html
