{Information}

This laptop uses the Skylake desktop processors.  Desktop processors are always more powerful than laptop ones, but are not generally found in laptops because they use too much power.  Using a desktop processor means that you have the power of a desktop machine in a laptop with the only downside being a lower battery life.

This laptop is the ideal gaming laptop as you get the power of the desktop CPU and the desktop-quality graphics performance of the latest nVidia 1060, 1070 or 1080 graphics cards.  You can use it on its own, or plug in up to 3 external screens and a variety of devices via USB3 or Thunderbolt 3, and use it like a desktop computer, when back at base.

Choose a "de-lidded" processor

Intel's newer processors use a lower grade heatpaste under the heatspreader and in some cases the heatpaste doesn't go across the whole processor chip. We can carry out a process called 'de-lidding' which is where we remove the heatspreader, clean out the old heatpaste that Intel uses, then replace it with a high quality liquid metal paste (Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra), then reseal the heatspreader. This helps reduce the temperature of the CPU by 10-15C.

De-lidding invalidates the Intel 1 year standard warranty, however, we extensively test the processors before de-lidding and give a DVC 1 year warranty on the processor in any case. If you would like to keep your Intel warranty as well then make sure to change the processor listed below to a regular Skylake processor rather than the "de-lidded" version.

Why choose a "de-lidded" processor?

...because if the processor can run at a cooler speed it will make less noise when processing and you can also choose to overclock it and run it at a faster speed than the standard speed.

We use this Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra heatpaste on our laptops on both the CPU and GPU to help reduce temperatures. Please note that due to the nature of this heat-paste it is not recommended you remove the heatsinks unless you have experience in applying heatpastes as this could damage your laptop.

Desktop graphics power

The graphics cards in these laptops use virtually the same hardware as found in the the desktop versions of the graphics card which means you get the best graphics performance possible in a laptop. This is obviously of maximum importance when it comes to gaming. Despite the power of the graphics card and processor you can still get a reasonable battery life, although when gaming it is best to use the laptop on mains power for the best performance.

USB3.1

This laptop has 1 USB3.1C port as well as 3 normal USB3 ports.  USB3.1 is a new type of port, twice as fast as USB3, which has been released with the Skylake processors.  We have some hard drive bays which use USB3.1 and these are significantly faster than with normal USB sockets.

Thunderbolt 3 for fast I/O

The USB3.1 socket is also a Thunderbolt 3 socket. You can connect Thunderbolt 3 devices, and Thunderbolt 2 devices using a Thunderbolt 3 to 2 converter.


{Choose your graphics card}

Graphics card

This laptop can have one of three graphics cards - a   6GB nVidia 1060, an 8GB 1070 or an 8GB 1080. You can buy a similar laptop which has a Quadro graphics card if you prefer, although for most programs the types of cards in these laptops are superior and cheaper.

All the graphics cards will power the Adobe Mercury Playback Engine and are good enough to use in DaVinci Resolve.  Of course, the more power the better, with the 1080 being the most powerful card.  Resolve, in particular, likes the graphics card to have a lot of RAM, so the 1070/1080M is the best choice if you are doing a lot in Resolve.

{Optional 4K Screen}

This laptop has a 17.3" screen, which, as will all screens, is the distance from one corner to another.

The standard laptop comes with an HD resolution screen - 1920x1080. However, this can be changed for a 4K screen - 3840x2160. In addition to the 4K resolution the screen has a wide colour gamut which means that the colours are more vibrant than on a normal screen. As it is an IPS screen it can also been seen properly form a wide range of different angles.

Have the screen calibrated

The extra colour range is great but may be a problem if you are trying to grade video on the computer. However, you could have this screen calibrated by us, using a piece of equipment called a "Spyder Elite" which we have at the office, and then you would have the option of switching the screen between different calibrated settings including REC709 and REC2020. The more brilliant colours of this screen also mean that some intensive colours, particularly bright reds and greens "pop" more than you are used to on a normal screen. If you have the screen calibrated then you can choose a setting with less intense colours if you prefer. You can re-do the calibration but you need to own a "Spyder Elite" to do so.

Will the calibration work on another screen I plug into the laptop?

No. Each screen has to be calibrated individually using the hardware we have, as each screen is different. We can only calibrate screens which are connected to the laptop and running Windows.



{Hard drives explained}

This laptop can have two normal 2.5" drives and two M.2 drives.  The M.2 drive is very fast and great for use as a program drive, as it will make the computer boot faster and work better.  It can also be used as video drive as well, however, the large size drives - currently the largest size available is a 1TB - are quite expensive. 

What is the difference between "normal" drives, solid state drives and M.2 drives?

Normal drives
..sometimes referred to as "SATA" drives, are made in the traditional manor with a series of platters and a head that moves across them to read the data.  We have been using drives like this in desktop and laptop computers for many years.  The big advantage of a normal drive is that they are relatively cheap for the amount of storage you can get.  Laptop drives are 2.5" in size where as desktop drives are bigger - 3.5" - and can be up to 4TB in size.  SATA drives are much faster than drives we were supplying 4-5 years ago and can easily cope with most HD footage, although are not fast enough to handle uncompressed HD video.

Solid state drives - or SSD
These drives are physically the same size as a "Normal" laptop drive are made in a similar way to a USB pen.  They are considerably faster.  They are also more expensive than SATA drives, which is why you would not have a laptop filled with SSDs instead of regular drives. 

M.2 drive
This type of drive is effectively the same thing as an SSD but is built into a circuit board, and is smaller.  There are two types of M.2 drives: the "SATA 6Gb/s" drives are the standard ones and good enough to run Windows and seriously speed up performance over the regular drives.  The "PCI-e" drives are the faster variations of M.2 drives for the optimum performance. This laptop can have two M.2 drives as well as two regular drives (either SATA or SSD). These two M.2 drives could both be the faster PCI-e variety, if you prefer.

Choose the screen size

This laptop can have a standard HD 60Hz G-Sync screen or a 4K "wide gammut" 60Hz (non-G-Sync) screen. You can also choose to have the screen calibrated to match a proper video colour space, for an extra 20.
