DVC Moving Premises on 7th August

We will be moving premises at the end of this month. Our new offices are in the Knoll Business Centre, in Hove and only a few minutes drive away from our current offices. Our phone number, email, and website will remain the same. The business centre has better parking than at our current location and you can park on nearby streets for free. It is also on the main A270 road so easy to find. We will put full details on how to find us on the website when we have moved. If you are planning to come to the office for either a demo or to pick up a system, please check with us first so we can make sure you can find us easily.

We intend to keep the disruption to a minimum during the move although on the day when we are moving it will be a bit harder to get through to us. If you cannot get through leave a message and we will be in touch as soon as possible. We are still looking to buy a permanent base rather than continue to rent, so we will probably be moving again in the next year, but we have moved several times since we started selling video editing equipment in 1995, so we are getting quite good at it by now!

The full address of our new premises is:

EDIUS 6.5 BOXEDIUS 6.5 is here!

The new version of EDIUS has arrived, and we have both upgrades from EDIUS 6 and crossgrades for people with older versions of EDIUS or other NLEs in stock now.

We reported on the new features available in EDIUS 6.5 and they include:

  • Stereoscopic editing.
  • Better quality downscaling and some layouter improvements.
  • A loudness meter.
  • Native support for RED footage.
  • A QuickTime codec so you can give EDIUS footage to mac users more easily.
  • A Grass Valley image stabiliser.
  • Lots of other small enhancements, like a Filmstrip view.
  • Much better alpha channel support.

We have full details of all the new features on our website: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/edius3d.html

On these pages you will also find details of how to get updated plug-in for ProDAD Mercalli and Vitascene. These filters were bundled with EDIUS 6, but not with EDIUS 6.5, so they will to be updated to work with the new version. These updates are available direct from ProDAD at a reasonable cost. These cheap updates are also available to owners of EDIUS 4 & 5. We have not extensively tested these new plug-ins and we believe they work pretty well for a first release but do have a couple of issues which will be addressed in future updates.

Vistitle will support EDIUS 6.5 in a free update according to Videostar (the makers of Vistitle). The update has not yet been released.

EDIUS 6.5 itself is working very well for the first version of a program. It supports all the same hardware as EDIUS 6 which includes the HDSPARK, HDSTORM, STORM Mobile and Storm 3G. We are making a new set of project presets and a user profile which will be included with EDIUS 6.5 discs when sent. We are also working on some updates for our EDIUS tutorial, however, since very little has changed we will not be remaking the whole tutorial, just producing a video on the extras. When finished full details will be sent in a newsletter.

Because third party software is no longer included EDIUS has dropped in price compared to EDIUS 6. We also have 3 different versions - EDIUS Elite, EDIUS Pro and EDIUS Neo. EDIUS Pro is the version which equates to the regular EDIUS 6.

EDIUS Elite 6.5 - 1,895+VAT
EDIUS Pro 6.5 - 399+VAT
EDIUS Pro 6.5 upgrade from EDIUS 6 179+VAT
EDIUS Pro 6.5 crossgrade - upgrade from previous versions of EDIUS and some other NLE software 229+VAT

These are our prices here at DVC and represent quite a discount on the normal RRP of these items.

EDIUS Elite's main benefits over EDIUS Pro are mainly of interest to broadcasters using some of Grass Valleys other equipment so they include K2 program import/export, K2 clip capture and interaction with Grass Valley's STRATUS. With Elite you can also have one user capturing the footage and a second user editing the footage as it is captured.

EDIUS Neo is currently unchanged and at version 3. We do not yet know if there will be an updated version of Neo which includes some of EDIUS Pro 6.5's features.

The biggest news has to be the EDIUS CROSSGRADE. This available to people who own a version of EDIUS prior to EDIUS 6, plus users of Adobe Premiere & Premiere Pro, Avid Liquid, Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro and Sony Vegas as well as other NLEs. All you need to do to qualify for the crossgrade is to tell us which program you are crossgrading from - we do not require the serial number of your old version, or a page of the manual (as has been asked on other crossgrades) and the program does not ask for anything other than the serial number that comes with it, on install. This is a great way to start editing with EDIUS - even if you just want to add it to your arsenal alongside your other editing program.

Since Adobe Premiere upgrades are now limited to owners of CS3 and above it is also a good option for a new NLE for owners of earlier versions of Premiere Pro or Premiere. We know a lot of people still using Premiere 6.5 out there on Canopus STORMS - sooner or later you will have to move, either because you buy a new camera which your software does not support or because your computer dies. We simply cannot make Premiere 6.5 and the Storm work on modern machines so we have found a lot of people switching to EDIUS rather than Premiere because it is cheaper and also EDIUS has the Storm's range of Canopus Effects. Of course, you may decide to go from Premiere 6.5 to Premiere Pro - we can help you with either move and of course don't mind which program you move to (as long as you do it through DVC ;-)).

EDIUS is also seen as the natural replacement for Avid Liquid by many, as they work in many similar ways. You can always come to our offices for a demo and discussion of your options, of course, as well as looking through all the information available on our website.

You can read more about EDIUS 6.5 on our website: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Canopus_Edius_Pro.html

Vistitle Promopacks still available

Vistitle Promopack - an animated title program for EDIUS which is normally 250 for just the program. You can currently buy the full program plus some extra 3D particle and handwriting plug-ins for 169+VAT. If you buy the program now it does not work in EDIUS 6.5, only EDIUS 5 or 6, but there is a free update coming soon (we do not have an exact date) which you will be able to use with the Promopack to make it work in EDIUS 6.5.

Read more on the special offers on our website: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/GRASS_VALLEY_OFFERS.html

If you bought a version of EDIUS 6 after 1st March 2012 you are eligible for a free update to EDIUS 6.5. You have to claim this direct from Grass Valley by 31st July so ACT NOW.

Once your application is accepted Grass Valley will send you a link to download the software and your serial number. EDIUS 6.5 no longer uses the dongle for software activation, but instead requires activation by serial number over the Internet. This does not have to be from the computer with EDIUS 6.5 installed, it can be from another computer. Full details are included with EDIUS 6.5. We know some of our customers have applied for, and received, their free update, and the process was relatively painless.

Your update will not include the third party plug-ins from ProDad and NewBlueFX and you will need to purchase updates directly from the manufacturers, assuming you want to carry on using these plug-ins in EDIUS 6.5. EDIUS 6.5 includes a Grass Valley image stabiliser, so we suggest you try this first before getting an update to ProDAD Mercalli. It does not have any real equivelants to Vitascene. Please also note that EDIUS 6.5 will only work on Windows 7, so if you are still using Windows XP or Vista, then it is time to update.

Even if you do not intend to install your EDIUS 6.5 immediately please apply now. If you miss the deadline you will have to pay to upgrade. The free upgrade offer is direct from Grass Valley and so we cannot do anything if you miss the opportunity to apply. You will be asked for proof of purchase - we can supply you with a PDF version of your invoice, if required.

New Adobe CS6 proving popular

As we reported last newsletter Adobe's CS6 suite has been available for about a month and we have drivers for Matrox, Black Magic and AJA cards so we can now supply fully working CS6 systems. If you missed the list of changes you can read details in our previous email newsletter here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/30th-April-2012.html. CS6 is a significant improvement over previous versions - Premiere is faster and sleeker, Encore is 64 bit, After Effects can track 3D scenes and make 3D objects and we have two new programs, Prelude for importing card based footage and SpeedGrade for grading.

If you have CS3 or CS4 you can upgrade to CS6 until the end of this year

Prior to the launch of CS6 Adobe had been saying that when CS6 is released you will not be able to upgrade from any version except CS5 or CS5.5. They have relented slightly and started a special offer where owners of CS3 and CS4 can still upgrade to CS6; this special offer runs until the end of the year.

You can read more about all the new versions on the Adobe website: http://www.adobe.com/content/dotcom/uk/products/creativesuite.html and our own website: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Adobe_Premiere_Pro.html

You can read more about Premiere Pro on our website: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Adobe_Premiere_Pro.html

We are also in the process of updating our Premiere and Encore tutorials. The main editing, tour and basic edit sections of the CS6 tutorial are already finished and if you buy a CS6 system will be included on your computer. The rest will be completed shortly and we expect it to be finished around the end of August.

Production Premium CS6Make sure you apply for a free upgrade if you qualify

If you bought a version of CS5.5 after 26th March you will qualify for a free update to CS6 direct from Adobe. You must apply before the 1st August or lose out. If you do not apply in time we know from previous experience there is nothing we can do about it. You can access the form by registering your software and logging on to your Adobe account. You will probably be asked for a copy of your invoice showing how the goods were paid. If you need a copy of your invoice just contact us at DVC and we will email you a PDF with the information included.

If you have a DVC system with CS5.5 installed we can help with the CS6 installation - normally a straight forward process although sometimes things can go slightly wrong. If you want us to carry out the upgrade and configure and test the system as well we will be happy to do so; as there is a reasonable amount of time involved there will also be a charge for this. Just contact us to discuss your needs.

Matrox MX02Matrox MX02 Mini Max special offer ends 31st July

For a limited time Matrox are offering their Matrox MX02 Mini Max at a significant discount. The MX02 Mini has HDMI, component, composite and SVIDEO in and out, and works with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 & CS6, Avid Media Composer 5 to 6 and Apple Final Cut Pro 7 and Final Cut Pro X. Black Magic 3D extremeNew drivers from Black Magic

Black Magic released the 9.5.3 drivers in the last few weeks and the fix a couple of important issues in Avid and Adobe Premiere Pro. In Avid you can now scrub properly with the audio enabled, and Premiere will now play 1440x1080 footage properly. Neither of these were "life threatening" but actually both were really irritating! Here is a list of all the changes:

  • Fixed audio scrubbing issue with Avid Media Composer 6
  • Fixed closed caption issue in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6
  • Fixed 1440x1080 output in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6
  • Improved eyeon Fusion 6 video output support
  • Improved Magix Movie Edit Pro support
  • You can download the new drivers from the Black Magic website: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/
