DVC Open day - Friday 2nd November

Black Magic Cinema CameraWe are having an open day at our new premises on Friday 2nd November.  We will start at 10 o'clock and finish around 5.   As usual, our open day will consist of a series of talks on different pieces of software and hardware.  The term "open day" does not really properly describe these events and we should really rename them "DVC free training days".   Our new premises have better parking facilities than the old one - which is free, both on site and on the roads nearby.

At the open day we will be demonstrating:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 & the Production Premium - we will have one demo specifically talking about the new aspects of Premeire Pro, and another on the benefits of the Production Premium -  especially in view of the current 30% off offer on the latter (see below).  We will be concentrating on the video side, obviously, focusing on After Effects, Audition, Encore and Prelude.
  • Grass Valley EDIUS 6.5 - the latest version of EDIUS, still available as a crossgrade from other programs.
  • Vistitle for EDIUS - the best animated titling program for EDIUS, available in its promopack with various exciting plug-ins.  The latest version adds proper 3D text support.
  • Black Magic Cinema camera (pictured) - we will have one of these new, and much on demand cameras, to demonstrate and Richard Payne, from Holdan, distributors of the Black Magic camera and EDIUS, will be here to talk about the camera, exactly what its advantages are over a "regular" camera and workflows allowing you to get the best out of it when using different editing programs.
  • In addition we will have our latest laptops on hand, both from HP and our own custom-built machines with the new IVYbridge processors.

DVC at BVE North

BVE NorthWe will be exhibiting at this years BVE North show in Manchester in the middle of November. The show lasts two days, on the 13th and 14th November; entry is free, as long as you book your place in advance.  The show is at Manchester central.

This is the first year we will be at BVE North.  We go to the BVE show in London every year, which is always very successful for us, but normally around this time of year we exhibit at the IOV show.  IOV are not running a show this year and instead they have a big presence at BVE North.  Our stand is directly opposite the IOV booth.  Our stand is B62.

On the stand we will have Adobe Premiere Pro & the Production Premium, Grass Valley EDIUS, our HP laptop complete with Matrox MX02 as well as Black Magic DaVinci running on a DVC system specifically designed to get the best out of the program.  We will also have a range of offers on software and systems.  We look forward to seeing you there.

DVC EDIUS 6.5 tutorial to download

As mentioned in our last newsletter our tutorial on the new features in EDIUS 6.5 is now available. This tutorial does not replace the existing EDIUS 6 tutorial and just covers the additions in the new program. It is about 3 hours long. You can see a full list of the contents on the website: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/EDIUS_6_training_dvd.html

We have also made this tutorial available for download from the website.  Simply order the tutorial and the webshop will send you the links to download it.  We have split it into 3 sections to make it easier to download. You can order this download from the above link.  We are planning to make the rest of the tutorials also available for download in the next few weeks.  As this is our first downloadable tutorial there may be some teething troubles; if you do have any problems please let us know.

The tutorial is 20 +VAT. It is only available in FLASH format which has far and away proved to be the most popular format for our tutorials.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 tutorial available

We have finished our Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 tutorial.  This has been completely remade and contains over 11 hours of material.  Full details will be put on the website next week, where the tutorial will be available for order and download.

This tutorial is entirely about Adobe Premiere Pro.  We are making a new tutorial on Adobe Encore which we hope will be available by the time of BVE North in mid-November.

If you buy a system from us the tutorial is included for free.  People who have had systems over the last couple of months will have already have had the first half of the tutorial included on their computers.  The sections we have just completed are all about effects, output, capturing and using third party hardware such as the Matrox MX02.

ADOBE PRODUCTION PREMIUM 30% OFF UNTIL END OF NOVeMBER

Until 30th November you can buy the entire Production Premium at 30% off the regular price.  The Production Premium includes Adobe Premiere Pro, Encore, After Effects, Photoshop Extended (the version which lets you paint on video), Audition, Illustrator, Flash Pro, Speedgrade and Prelude.  Our DVC price for this offer is 999+VAT.

Who is eligible?

Video professionals and broadcasters and owners of qualifying Adobe products - essentially just about everyone.  If using a different editing program this gives you access to all the Adobe software at a discount price - all of which complement ANY editing program.  It also gives an upgrade path to anyone who has version of the Production Premium prior to CS3.  At the moment there are upgrades available for CS3 and later versions to the CS6 suite, but not for people with earlier versions.   The upgrade is available as a licence, not as a boxed version, although this does not make any real practical difference.

What proof is Needed?

Obviously we will need name, address etc.  If changing from another program we would need this information as well.  However a serial number or proof of ownership document is not required.

Is a licence version different to a boxed version?

This offer is ONLY available if buying a licence version of the software rather than a boxed version.  A licensed version is exactly the same as the boxed version, but you download the software and install it, as opposed to having a boxed shipped.  A licensed version has the same upgrade rights etc as the boxed version.  A licence is not the same as the Adobe Cloud.  The Adobe Cloud is essentially a rental of the software and if you stop paying you lose the software.  This licence is a perpetual one - you pay for the software and it is yours.

How do I order the software?

Simply place the order on the webshop, or via phone, and we will send you a link to the licence and instructions on how to download the software, normally within a day of placing the order.  This will also give you access to your serial number.

Do I get manuals with the licence software?

Even if you buy the boxed version of the Production Premium you do not get printed manuals these days.  The help files are all on-line and can be downloaded to your computer after installation.

Are there any downsides to using a licence version rather than a boxed version?

No.

Adobe webinar on the Production Premium offer

Adobe are running a free webinar on the 30% offer and the benefits of the Production Premium at 12 midday on Friday 26th October.  No pre-registration or login is required, you can just sign in as a guest.  This webinar is using Adobe connect so it is a good idea to follow the link below in advance of the meeting so your computer can install any software that it may need.  Once you log in you will just be presented with a screen saying "this session has ended", which is completely normal, since there is nothing going on there at the moment.  On Friday 26th the login will work.

Of course you can always come to our open day, see us at BVE or just give us a ring to discuss the offer as well!

Matrox MX02 Mini Max offer extended to end 31st December

The Mini Max is normally 599+VAT, but is currently 420+VAT - which makes it only about 100 more than buying a non-MAX version of a Mini. This offer has been running for a couple of months and has been extended to the end of the year.

What does the extra MAX give you?

Fast H264 encoding - better than realtime on a modern system.  A modern 2011 pin system can actually encode H264 very fast with Premiere Pro - an hour can be encoded in about 1 hours.  The MAX can do the same file in 50 minutes (this is assuming you have a Mercury Playback card which is rendering all the effects really fast as well).

The advantage is not just the extra speed.  When encoding, the MAX does all the work, which means your computer processor is free to do other things, whereas when Premiere is encoding the processor will be working hard, meaning everything else slows down.

You can also capture live into H264 - either the correct kind of files for Blu-ray or progressive MP4 files.  This is done using a special Matrox H264 capture program rather than Premiere Pro.  We actually use this when filming parts of our tutorials as it saves space and the pictures are extremely good quality.  You also have the option, when capturing MP4 files, so capture a full resolution Matrox I-frame file at the same time.  You can use the MX02 scaling abilities to convert HD to SD or 1080 to 720 as you capture as well, all in high quality.  All for another 100, while the offer lasts.
